The community lies partly within a Special Landscape Area where particular reCriggion Quarrygard is given to the natural beauty of the countryside and is therefore suitable for a small amount of development only, which must be sensitive and appropriate to the high quality of the area.

One of the main employers in the area is Hanson, operating at Criggion Quarry. Stone has been extracted from Criggion Hill since the early 1800’s. The quarry is now a modern operation producing around 750,000 tonnes of stone a year. The quarry employs a workforce of around 40 and many more local people including lorry drovers and suppliers rely on the site for employment. The current planning permission allows Hanson to extract rock from here until 2041. The quarry works under strict controls governing noise, dust, use of explosives and other environmental conditions. Organised group visits are welcomed and should be arranged direct with the manager at the Quarry.
