Dwyriw Today  (Dwyriw Heddiw)
A rural district in the uplands of Mid Montgomeryshire, drained Eastwards by the two main tributaries of the Avon Rhiw.  Highest points are in the West and South of the district on Moorland over 1300ft above sea level (>400m).  It is a sparsely populated district with under 350 people on the electoral roll.  The largest settlement is the village of Adfa with three further clusters of population at Llanyddelan, Llanllugan and Cefn Coch.  There are a mixture of Welsh and English speaking families in the area.

Local Attractions
Notable historical buildings include Capel Coffa Lewis Evan in Adfa and St. Mary's Church of Llanllugan.  Laburnum hedges bloom in late Spring.  There is one Site of Special Scientific Interest in the district.  Carreg Hywel Harris, commemorative stone opposite Llanllugan Church. "Golden Mile", spring daffodil show along from Llanllugan southwestwards.

Education
Children of Junior school age travel outside the district to Ysgol Rhiw Bechan, Tregynon or Ysgol Gynradd, Llanfair Caereinion.  High school is at Llanfair Caereinion.  Bus transport is provided for the schools.

Local Business
The mainstay of the local economy is farming, based largely on sheep and beef cattle stock rearing.  Other local businesses include:

  • H.V. Bowen & Sons - Operating from the Tan Y Foel Quarry supplying aggregates, road stone and cement.
  • M.P. Foulkes - The Adfa Garage is a tyre specialist and bottled gas distributor for all of Central Wales.  Tel: (01938) 810347
  • The Red Ridge Outdoor Centre - Another important employer that provides training for individuals, higher education, schools and youth groups.   They have provision for those with learning difficulties.  http://www.btinternet.com/~Redridgecentre
  • G.P.O. - Sub post offices with limited opening hours in Adfa and Cefn Coch.
