Cyngor Cymuned LLANDRINIO Community Council - Home Page

The area covered by the Llandrinio Community Council is split into two by the trunk road A483, linking Welshpool and Oswestry. To the east of this road lies Llandrinio village, near to the River Severn and spreading along the B4393 in three distinct clusters together with the LlandrinioRodney.JPG (27980 bytes)scattered community of Rhos Common, whilst Arddleen, the largest of the settlements, is situated on the western side of the road with its satellite communities of Sarnau and Penrhos. Together the communities consist of 426 dwellings with an electorate of 943.

The Council itself consists of 11 members and meets bi-monthly at the alternating venues of Llandrinio Village Hall and Arddleen Community Centre. The current chairman of the Council is Mr John Thomas of Edgebold Farm, Sarnau(Tel: 01938 590277).

Both settlements have active voluntary committees running numerous and diverse activities. At the recently modernised and  extended Llandrinio Village Hall residents can play short mat bowling, attend Karate sessions and dance indoors; whilst outside there is a football pitch, cricket pitch and children's play area, as well as an all weather multi use area. It is on this field that the annual Llandrinio carnival takes place in June.

Local organisations such as the Parent and Toddler Group, the W.I. and The Royal British Legion also hold their meetings in the Hall and an enthusiastic group of volunteers produce the monthly magazine "The Bridge". For further information on the various activities contact Mrs 0 Evans on 01938 556680. Penrhos too has a meeting place in the Old School: for further information on this venue contact Mr Thomas on 01938 590277. At Arddleen the Community Association there organises regular social events including badminton, whist drives, bowling and sequence dancing: for further information contact the secretary, Mr Brian E Lawson on 01938 590254. Arddleen also has its own W.I.

Close to Llandrinio Bridge and protected by flood defences constructed in the 1700s, lies the village War memorial and Llandrinio Church, dedicated to St. Peter, St. Paul and St.Trinio; a religious settlement has existed on or close by this site since 600AD. A Leaflet detailing the church's history can be purchased inside.

Other places of worship are the Methodist chapel at Rhos Common, the listed Presbyterian Chapel at Arddleen built in 1823 as well as the chapel at Sarnau and Church of Holy Trinity at Penrhos.

Other listed buildings in the area include Llandrinio Hall, Trederwen House, The Boat House,Llandrinio and Burgedin Locks Cottage.

Future development in Llandrinio village is to be limited to a small area to the rear of the shop whereas Arddleen is classed as a principal settlement and has grown considerably over the past year and now comprises a good mix of housing of all types. Land has also been allocated here for light industrial village workshops to provide local employment and the community's County Primary School is also located in the village.

The community is a mainly residential one, and Oswestry, Welshpool, Shrewsbury and Telford are all within easy reach. The major sources of employment are agriculture and the various small businesses that exist within the community. In Llandrinio one can buy petrol/diesel and stamps at the Village Shop, Garage and Post Office, and browse for bric a brac in the 50/50 shop set up as a fundraising venture by the Llandrinio Village Hall committee.
