About the Area
The area is to the West of Llandrindod Wells and consists of a mainly rural area in
the upper reaches of the Wye Valley. It is famous for the fine fishing and walking
as well as the beautiful unspoilt scenery and spectacular countryside. To the West
are the Cambrian mountains, to the East is Radnor Forest and to the South are the Black
mountains. The Elan Valley is only 8 miles away.
Main Villages
Llanyre - 2 miles West of Llandrindod Wells
Newbridge on Wye - Built on the banks of the River Wye and probably a
traditional crossing place from as far back as the Roman occupation. The village
grew in importance however as a stopping off point on the Drovers route between Tregaron
and the English cattle markets. During the last century there were thirteen public
houses to cater for travellers including the now demolished Sun Inn that was a safe house
for the rioters during the Rebecca Riots of 1843-44.
Location
Llanyre is on the A4081, 2 miles from Llandrindod Wells. Newbridge is on the A470
trunk road between Builth Wells and Rhayader, 5 miles from Llandrindod Wells. The
A470 is the main road linking North and South Wales.
